Cosgrove descent

It is not possible to recreate the canal through all its original route due to the housing that has been built in Old Stratford and Deanshanger and the A5 the bisects the channel. As such, the engineering feasibility study recommends a new section passing under the existing A5 road bridge at Old Stratford and then on through Passenham as the best way to connect from Cosgrove arm to the original line west of Deanshanger.

A staircase lock or locks will need to be constructed in this section of the canal and a channel will be built under the A5 at the appropriate time and when funds are available. The work is being discussed with all relevant landowners and statutory bodies as plans become firmer. Design work continues to be undertaken to explore options and how best to achieve the new channel.

This is a similar project to that which the Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Trust are working on to overcome a road crossing. Details of their solution can be found at http://lhcrt.org.uk/info_display.htm?infoframe=darnfordpark.htm
