Volunteers are one of our most valuable resources and without them the achievements of the Society to date would never have been attained.

Everyone volunteers for a reason. We are keen to engage with our volunteers by finding out from you what drives you to become involved and what you would like to gain from the experience. We aim to match your motivations with the tasks where the Society needs your help. From paperwork and administration to research on how to mount a lock gate, to baking a cake and much, much more.

Our volunteers help out the Society for a number of reasons, including:

  • Supporting the canal restoration
  • A love of the outdoors and interest in the environment
  • Learning new countryside skills – e.g hedge laying, bricklaying, and using new machinery
  • Keen interest in canals and boating
  • Meeting new people and socialising
  • Offering or gaining certain expertise – e.g fund raising, publicity, charity involvement, planning, conservation, environmental policy
  • Offering or gaining creative experience – e.g. photography, websites and publishing
  • Keeping fit and healthy
  • Interest in expanding your employability

We understand your time is limited, and therefore you are free to commit as much or as little as you are able to the Society’s work.

On average we run three Work Parties a month. Work Parties give you the chance to help us dig the canal. Click here for more information.

Another way we need support from our volunteers is for you to be a Buckingham Canal Society ambassador, and spread the word of our work to everyone you meet. It is an exciting time for the Buckingham Canal Society. Take that excitement to the streets as one of our ambassadors.
