Work Parties

Our work parties usually take place on:

  • Sundays – held on the second Sunday of each month
  • Thursdays – every other Thursday

Additional work parties are organised depending upon volunteer availability and project needs.

Currently, we are working on four separate sites along the disused Buckingham Canal. It will depend on weather conditions and seasonal requirements, like the bird nesting season, which site you will be asked to work at. They usually run from 10 am to 3 pm and it is advisable to wear old clothes, steel capped boots if you have them or otherwise walking boots or wellies will do. If it is a particular muddy work site you will be advised beforehand. You will also need to bring your lunch with you and if you are under 16 years old you will need to be accompanied by an adult.

Health and Safety is very important to us and you will be given training on all tools and equipment that will be used on the day and advised about any extra equipment that may be necessary for the tasks in hand. Some tasks may require the wearing of hard hats or other protective equipment which will be supplied. Occasionally, we run work parties that use construction plant and these are undertaken to a greater level of necessary paperwork and control. You will be welcome to join in but may need to undergo specific briefing/training prior to participating on these occasions.

No experience is required beforehand but if you do have any specialist skills that you feel would be useful to the Society do let us know so that we can incorporate them into our work parties. There are a variety of tasks on site and most people find one that suits their needs. These vary from the more strenuous ones to the very muddy ones to the much lighter ones but most importantly your day should have been fun!

Our volunteers come from all walks of life, some are boaters, others are interested in the history and heritage of the canal, whilst for others it is the wildlife aspect that interests them as one of our sites is a nature reserve. Some people decide to join us because they have seen a group of our volunteers at work and feel this is something they would like to do. Whatever the reason for joining most volunteers continue working with us because they see the progress being made towards the restoration of the canal and the friends they have started to make. Most important to us is that you enjoy yourselves and feel a sense of achievement at the end of the day.

Our volunteers are our most valuable asset and without you the restoration work on the Buckingham Canal would not take place!

Work party locations vary – please contact Athina for more details of where we will be on each of the dates above.
