Little Hill Farm
Where History and Restoration Meet!
Accommodation Bridge Restoration

At Little Hill Farm, the Society has invested years of dedicated work, culminating in the restoration of the accommodation bridge over the canal in 2011. This impressive stone and brick bridge, serving as the landowner’s access point, underwent meticulous repairs. Lime mortar was used to re-point the structure, and we recovered original bricks and stones from the canal bed to maintain its authentic character. Our resourceful member even hand-crafted additional coping bricks, ensuring a perfect finish. The towpath beneath the bridge received a makeover, thanks to generous brick donations from Travis Perkins.
Ongoing Conservation Efforts
Regular work parties continue to make a difference at Little Hill Farm. Our volunteers keep returning to the site, controlling vegetation growth and preserving the excellent condition of this original canal stretch. We take pride in the minimal work required to re-water this section, testament to the dedicated maintenance efforts.
Future Plans: A Medium-Term Goal
Looking ahead, we have an exciting project on the horizon—replacing the other accommodation crossing. By doing so, we can remove the current 10 meters of infill. The original lift bridge, which once graced this spot, left remnants of its history. The stones that once supported its lowered position are still visible, bearing witness to its past. Intriguingly, some of these stones were re-purposed from a railway, showcasing our resourcefulness and commitment to preserving heritage.
