Hyde Lane
Location
Hyde Lane is a captivating site owned by Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) and leased to the Buckingham Canal Society (BCS). Accessible from various footpaths, including the Ouse Valley Way, Hyde Lane offers a tranquil escape for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
Unveiling History
Step back in time as you encounter the remnants of the original canal at Hyde Lane. This section proudly features the lock chamber, known as Lock Number 1, showcasing the canal’s rich history. In 2008, conservation work was performed on this historical structure, thanks to a generous grant from Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd. (WREN, now know as FCC Communities Foundation). To add authenticity, donated lock gates from the Canal & River Trust (CRT) have been skilfully fitted, offering a glimpse into the canal’s bygone era.
BCS Conservation Efforts
Hyde Lane is a testament to BCS’s dedication to conservation and restoration. One remarkable achievement is the restoration of the ancient towpath hedge. Through meticulous laying and replanting, we have revitalized this hedge, providing improved habitats and a vital migration route for insects, birds, and other wildlife. In recognition of our environmental preservation efforts, we were honoured with the CPRE MARK from the Campaign to Protect Rural England in 2012.
Tranquil Pathways
The towpath of the Ouse Valley Way meanders through Hyde Lane, providing visitors with serene pathways to explore the reserves scenic landscapes. To ensure safety and enjoyment, the towpath has been carefully levelled and enhanced with wooden edging boards.
Ongoing Restoration
While work continues to re-water this site, the original canal stretch at Hyde Lane remains in excellent condition, requiring minimal effort to be revived. Dedicated work parties diligently manage vegetation growth and uphold the area’s integrity, paving the way for its eventual re-watering. Detailed plans and budgets are under-way to guide the next steps of this exciting restoration project.
