Give a little, get a lot …whilst helping save Britain’s industrial heritage – canal camps – including 2 weeks at Cosgrove!!

IWA’s Waterway Recovery Group (WRG) is excited to launch its schedule of fun-filled, canal restoration working holidays for 2016! WRG’s week-long Canal Camps offer a unique opportunity to volunteer and learn new skills, whilst exploring amazing parts of Britain’s industrial heritage.

WRG volunteers have been restoring canals for over 45 years. Canal Camps often act as a catalyst to a canal restoration project making significant progress in just one week. In the summer of 2015 WRG volunteers spent 2,400 days restoring the canals of England and Wales and they want to do even more in 2016! That’s where YOU get involved!

In 2016 there are 35 Canal Camps planned on 16 different canal restoration sites, offering volunteers the chance to uncover and repair a canal basin on the Stover Canal, restore a lock on the Grantham Canal, restore a bridge on the Buckingham Canal or build a brand new bridge on the Wey and Arun Canal.

WRG attracts a wide range of volunteers, from young volunteers taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme; to waterway enthusiasts who wish to make a contribution to restoring and preserving the system; to teachers, doctors and office workers who want to do something completely different for their summer holidays … basically anyone who wants to have fun!

First time volunteers Stuart and Judi Young said “The camaraderie amongst the group was brilliant, everyone mucking in together and working hard. The sense of achievement at the end of the week was amazing. We enjoyed our first camp so much that two months later, we returned for our second camp!”
