Bourton Meadow and Hyde Lane updates

Buckingham Canal Society have been working hard and making lots of progress at Cosgrove during 2014 with re-watering tests at that site going well. However, following the re-watering of Bourton Meadow near Buckingham, it was confirmed in the summer of 2014 that the liner that had been fitted was not holding water. Once it was technically confirmed that the water loss was more than evaporation etc, subsequent laboratory tests and liaison with manufacturer and contractors were undertaken and have been ongoing since then.

Work is now agreed to re-reline it with a different liner technology during the coming spring. Meanwhile the coir mats and plants have been removed in preparation. They will be replanted after the new liner has been fitted and hoped that this can be done whilst the plants remain largely dormant. Additional planting will then occur with the help of local school children before the canal is filled.

At the Hyde Lane Nature reserve section of the canal, the Society have been busy over the winter weeks and anticipate filling the currently dry canal section there with water in the coming summer.
