Earthworks and flooding

With the recent weather, a number of people have recently asked how the flooding aspects of the canal restoration can be implemented.

These pictures taken of a canal in Devon after recent heavy rain show how a restored Buckingham canal could benefit the local community.

You can clearly see the split level earthworks that enable the channel to be used for retaining flood water until the adjacent watercourses can deal with the extra volume. Potentially, this will benefit residents and farmers in the communities along the canal route in the Ouse Valley and further downstream

This is very similar to how we anticipate the current approach to flooding will develop at certain locations along the canal restoration route. We are exploring these with the EA, landowners and other partners during 2014.

Please stay safe when walking along the canal especially near floodwater.

Happy New Year.
