THE CANAL TO BUCKINGHAM

The Buckingham Canal

The waterway to Buckingham ran from the Grand Union lock at Cosgrove along the Stony Stratford and Buckingham Arms: it closed down in the 1960s.

The BCS would like to see the canal re-opened, using the original line wherever possible. The restoration of the canal would bring new life, new recreational opportunities and new, environment-friendly business to the countryside and towns between Cosgrove and Buckingham. Restoration projects elsewhere in the UK have overcome much greater obstacles than any found on the line of the Buckingham Canal, the Society recognises that restoration is a long-term project which will involve major investment but when restored will bring considerable benefits to the areas through which the restored canals pass.

The BCS was founded in January 1992 is Registered Charity number 1072924. It is affiliated to the Inland Waterways Association and has members all over the UK. The BCS is also a member of the Milton Keynes Heritage Association to which it is deeply indebted to for assistance in maintaining this site.

John Bercow becomes a patron of Buckingham Canal Society

John BercowThe Rt Hon John Bercow, MP for Buckingham, has become a patron of the Buckingham Canal Society. At a meeting with the Society and Buckinghamshire County Council, John said “I am delighted to become a patron of the Buckingham Canal Society. I have been very impressed with the vision of the canal restoration. It has many potential benefits that it can bring to Buckingham and the Ouse Valley both from economic, environmental and potential flood management perspectives. Local residents and councillors have come together and are driving this through both the Buckingham Canal Society and the Buckingham Local Area Forum, demonstrating the best practices of the community working together with the support of local government. This project will clearly benefit all the communities it touches both in collaboration that it brings and the end result of a restored waterway.”

John will be joining BCS for a site visit to some of our restoration projects on Saturday 2nd October along with some other local councillors. If you are able to come along you will be welcome. Please contact terry on 01280 860316 for more details.

Fancy a Natter?

We are reshaping the Thursday get together and from September we will meet 3rd Fridays on the odd months and 3rd Thursdays on the even months. The purpose is now broader than just the mapping and we hope to make it a regular social and open topic discussion about the canal restoration progress. We are happy to move venue if folk want, or happy to meet at Thornborough as we have been.
