Trustees – A trustee is similar to a director except its for a charity. Trustees have overall accountability for a charities administration, and are responsible for ensuring that it makes the best use of its resources to deliver its mission. All Trustees sit on the Executive Board that meets around 8 times a year to discuss the strategic overview of the charity, budgets, projects progress etc.
Trustees have collective responsibility for, amongst other things: Holding the Executive Officer to account, · Ensuring the charity is financially stable,· Making strategic decisions, with the senior team,· Ensure the charity is compliant,· Ensuring sufficient policies are in place (e.g. safety and safeguarding policies)
On top of this, most Trustees are encouraged to engage in either one sub-committee or offer some direct support with the senior management team. The three sub-committees of the board are Projects, Grants & Fundraising, Strategy & Governance, Audit
These are un-remunerated positions; however, BCS has a Trustees Expenses policy which makes provision for the reimbursement of reasonable expenses incurred in undertaking the duties of a Trustee.
Trustees are supported in their role by way of induction, training and development opportunities through 3rd party organisations such as community foundations and local council led initiatives
